Essential oils evaporate at different rates. In perfumery, aroma molecules are grouped into three tiers by evaporation time: Top notes open, Middle notes form the heart, Base notes linger longest. A complete fragrance typically uses all three.

Phân tử nhẹ, bay nhanh. Mở đầu của một fragrance, ấn tượng đầu tiên khi xịt/bôi. Hương đầu thường mất trước khi cấu trúc tổng thể bộc lộ.
Light, fast-evaporating molecules. The opening of a fragrance — the first impression on application. Top notes typically fade before the full structure develops.
Phân tử trung bình. Là trái tim (heart) của fragrance, định hình tính cách chính. Bộc lộ sau khi top note bay đi.
Medium-weight molecules. The heart of the fragrance, defining its main character. Emerges as the top notes evaporate.
Phân tử nặng, bay chậm. Tầng đáy bền của fragrance, đóng vai trò fixative giúp cả cấu trúc giữ trên da/giấy hương. Bộc lộ rõ sau vài giờ.
Heavy, slow-evaporating molecules. The lasting base of the fragrance, acting as a fixative that holds the whole structure on skin or fragrance strip. Reveals fully after several hours.
Tỉ lệ kinh điển: 30% top + 50% middle + 20% base. Tỉ lệ này cho hương cân bằng, hợp với perfumery cổ điển. Có thể điều chỉnh: nhiều top hơn cho cologne, nhiều base hơn cho heavy oriental.
Bắt đầu pha từ base, sau đó middle, cuối cùng top. Ngược lại với thứ tự bay hơi. Lý do: base note nặng và ít thay đổi khi tiếp xúc air; top note dễ oxi hoá nên thêm cuối để bảo vệ.

The classic ratio is 30% top + 50% middle + 20% base. This produces a balanced fragrance suited to classical perfumery. Adjust as needed: more top for a cologne, more base for a heavy oriental.
Build a blend from base up — base first, then middle, then top. Opposite to the evaporation order. Reasoning: base notes are heavy and change little on contact with air; top notes oxidise readily so add them last to protect.

Ngoài cách phân loại theo tầng hương (top/middle/base), Lê Mai còn dùng một bản đồ khác để định vị tinh dầu — gọi là scent character map. Bản đồ này tổ chức quanh 5 family trung tâm và các từ mô tả tính cách (character descriptor) bao quanh.
Sử dụng song song với tháp hương: tháp hương trả lời câu hỏi "khi nào hương xuất hiện?", còn character map trả lời "hương đó cảm giác như thế nào?". Hai góc nhìn bổ sung cho nhau khi pha trộn.
Beyond tier-based classification (top/middle/base), Lê Mai uses a second map to locate an oil — the scent character map. It is organised around five central families and surrounded by character descriptors.
Used alongside the pyramid: the pyramid answers when a scent appears, while the character map answers how it feels. The two views complement each other when blending.
