A simple alternative for personal formulations is infusion or decoction: 1 part plant material + 10 parts distilled water, brought to a boil then turned off, steeped 15 to 30 minutes (do not boil delicate flowers). Filter through cheesecloth. This is not true hydrosol; it is properly called plant water or tea infusion. Shelf life is short, 3 to 5 days refrigerated.
Home-made plant water retains some actives but lacks the volatile compounds of distillation. Suitable for immediate mask use, not for bottling, retail, or warehousing.
To extend home-made plant water shelf life: add 5 to 10 percent vegetable glycerin (humectant + mild preservative) or rubbing alcohol, refrigerate. Still not a full replacement for distilled hydrosol.
