Salvia sclarea là cây thảo Địa Trung Hải, sản xuất tại Pháp, Nga, Bulgaria, Trung Quốc và Mỹ. Sản xuất Mỹ chủ yếu cho tách dung môi để cô lập sclareol cho công nghiệp synthetic ambergris.
Một số tinh dầu clary sage được sản xuất từ lá lên men nhẹ, cho hương richer, vegetable-like hơn.

Salvia sclarea is a Mediterranean herb, produced in France, Russia, Bulgaria, China and the USA. US production is primarily for solvent extraction to isolate sclareol for synthetic ambergris industry.
Some clary sage oils are produced from slightly fermented leaves, yielding a richer, more vegetable-like aroma.

Theo Franchomme & Pénöel, clary sage oil là estrogen-like do hàm lượng sclareol. Tuy nhiên tinh dầu thường chỉ chứa 0.1 đến 0.4 phần trăm sclareol theo phân tích GC. Sclareol thực ra không có hoạt tính estrogen-like rõ ràng. Đặc tính estrogen-like trong literature aromatherapy phổ thông không có cơ sở khoa học mạnh.
According to Franchomme & Pénöel, clary sage oil is estrogen-like due to its sclareol content. However the oil typically contains only 0.1 to 0.4 percent sclareol by GC analysis. Sclareol itself has no clear estrogen-like activity. The estrogen-like claim widespread in popular aromatherapy literature has weak scientific basis.
