Boldo oil gây co giật trên chuột ở liều uống 70 mg trên kg. Liều LD50 đường uống trên chuột 130 mg trên kg.
Dữ liệu trên người về wormseed oil (cũng chứa ascaridole) cho thấy liều gây tử vong nằm trong khoảng 10 đến 40 mg trên kg, gợi ý ascaridole nhiều lần độc hơn trên người so với loài gặm nhấm.
Cả α- và β-thujone đều thuộc nhóm độc trung bình, LD50 đường uống dao động 190 đến 500 mg trên kg theo loài.
High toxicity. Neurotoxic.

Boldo oil produced convulsions in rats at an oral dose of 70 mg per kg. Acute oral LD50 in rats 130 mg per kg.
Human data for wormseed oil (also ascaridole-rich) indicate a fatal dose in the 10 – 40 mg per kg range, suggesting ascaridole is many times more toxic to humans than to rodents.
Both α- and β-thujone are moderately toxic, with oral LD50 values from 190 to 500 mg per kg across species.

Peumus boldus là cây thân gỗ đặc hữu Chile, lá xanh sậm, dày, có mùi nồng. Tinh dầu được chưng cất hơi từ lá khô.
Họ Monimiaceae. Lá boldo được dùng truyền thống tại Chile làm thuốc tiêu hóa và lợi mật, nhưng dạng nguyên liệu khác hẳn tinh dầu, nồng độ ascaridole và thujone trong trà lá thấp hơn nhiều.
Có chemotype Peumus boldus chứa rất ít ascaridole, nhưng các chemotype này không có sẵn thương mại.
Peumus boldus is a tree endemic to Chile, with dark green leathery leaves and a pungent scent. The essential oil is steam-distilled from dried leaves.
Family Monimiaceae. Boldo leaves are used traditionally in Chile as a digestive and choleretic, but the leaf form is unlike the essential oil, ascaridole and thujone are present at much lower concentrations in the leaf tea.
Chemotypes of Peumus boldus with very low ascaridole exist but are not commercially available.
Trên cơ sở rủi ro và lợi ích, không có lý do nào để dùng tinh dầu boldo. Nguyên liệu rủi ro quá cao so với bất kỳ giá trị thẩm mỹ hoặc trị liệu nào nó có thể mang lại.
On a risk/benefit basis, there is no rationale for using boldo essential oil. The risk is too high relative to any aesthetic or therapeutic value it might offer.
