Magnolia figo, trước đây xếp trong chi Michelia, là cây bụi thường xanh bản địa miền nam Trung Quốc. Ở Việt Nam cây được gọi là hàm tiếu. Hoa nhỏ, màu kem viền tím nâu, hé nở, nở vào mùa xuân và có mùi chuối chín rất rõ. Tên tiếng Anh banana shrub đến từ mùi này.
Không nên nhầm hàm tiếu với ngọc lan trắng (Magnolia × alba, trước đây Michelia alba) hay ngọc lan vàng (Magnolia champaca). Hai loài ngọc lan này là nguồn của champaca absolute và tinh dầu lá, đã có trang riêng trong thư viện.
Absolute hàm tiếu được làm bằng chiết hoa với dung môi thành concrete, rồi xử lý bằng ethanol. Nguồn absolute thương mại chưa được xác nhận.
Mùi chuối của hoa gợi đến các ester như isoamyl acetate, nhưng số liệu thành phần công bố cho hoa và cho absolute chưa được xác minh. Vì vậy trang này không liệt kê thành tố cụ thể.
Hàm tiếu được trồng làm cây cảnh ở nhiều vùng cận nhiệt đới, kể cả Nhật Bản và đông nam Hoa Kỳ. Mùi hoa rõ nhất vào buổi chiều và những ngày ấm.
Trong perfumery, nốt hàm tiếu thuộc nhóm hoa trái cây, gần ngọc lan và ylang ylang. Ở Việt Nam, hàm tiếu thường được trồng trong sân nhà và sân chùa.
Magnolia figo, formerly placed in Michelia, is an evergreen shrub native to southern China. In Vietnam it is called hàm tiếu. Its small cream flowers edged purple-brown open halfway in spring and smell distinctly of ripe banana, which gives the English name banana shrub.
It should not be confused with white champaca (Magnolia × alba, formerly Michelia alba) or orange champaca (Magnolia champaca). Those two are the sources of champaca absolute and leaf oil, which have their own pages in the library.
Banana shrub absolute is made by extracting the flowers with a solvent to a concrete, then processing with ethanol. A commercial absolute source has not been confirmed.
The banana scent suggests esters such as isoamyl acetate, but published composition data for the flower and the absolute have not been verified. This page therefore lists no specific constituents.
Banana shrub is grown as an ornamental in many subtropical regions, including Japan and the south-eastern United States. The scent is strongest in the afternoon and on warm days.
In perfumery, the banana shrub note belongs with fruity florals, close to champaca and ylang ylang. In Vietnam, banana shrub is often planted in house and temple courtyards.
