3-Butyl phthalide is the characteristic phthalide of celery leaf and seed oils. Data indicate low risk.

Skin. Undiluted application to rabbit skin under occlusion for 24 hours was moderately irritating. A 2 percent patch test on 30 volunteers gave no irritation or sensitization.

Oral. Acute oral LD50 in rats is 2.45 g/kg; rabbit dermal LD50 exceeds 5 g/kg.

Cancer. The compound induces glutathione S-transferase in mouse liver and small intestine and reduces forestomach cancer incidence.
