Crocus sativus là cây hoa nghệ tây, trồng truyền thống Iran, Tây Ban Nha, Hy Lạp, Maroc. Nhụy đỏ thẫm bên trong hoa cho ra saffron, gia vị đắt nhất thế giới.
Mỗi hoa cho 3 sợi nhụy. Cần khoảng 150,000-200,000 hoa cho 1 kg saffron khô. Hái bằng tay vào sáng sớm trước khi nắng.
Saffron absolute hiếm hơn nhiều so với saffron spice, đa số saffron được dùng làm ẩm thực và y học truyền thống.
Họ Iridaceae, cùng họ với iris (orris).
