Crocus sativus là cây hoa nghệ tây, trồng truyền thống Iran, Tây Ban Nha, Hy Lạp, Maroc. Nhụy đỏ thẫm bên trong hoa cho ra saffron, gia vị đắt nhất thế giới.
Mỗi hoa cho 3 sợi nhụy. Cần khoảng 150,000-200,000 hoa cho 1 kg saffron khô. Hái bằng tay vào sáng sớm trước khi nắng.
Saffron absolute hiếm hơn nhiều so với saffron spice, đa số saffron được dùng làm ẩm thực và y học truyền thống.
Họ Iridaceae, cùng họ với iris (orris).
Crocus sativus is the saffron crocus, traditionally cultivated in Iran, Spain, Greece, and Morocco. The deep red stigmas inside the flower yield saffron, the world's most expensive spice.
Each flower yields 3 stigmas. About 150,000-200,000 flowers are needed for 1 kg of dried saffron. Hand-picked at dawn before the sun rises.
Saffron absolute is much rarer than saffron spice, most saffron goes to culinary and traditional medicine uses.
