Massoia lactone is the dominant constituent of massoia oil. The compound is described as so irritating that standard sensitization and phototoxicity tests could not be conducted.
IFRA recommends that massoia lactone not be used as a fragrance ingredient. The compound merits further open and transparent investigation.
Safety recommendation. The proposed maximum dermal use level is 0.01 percent. Massoia oil is essentially unsuitable for topical applications.
