Mùi phân đậm và ngột khi đậm đặc; khi rất loãng chuyển sang ấm, hơi hoa và giống long não nhẹ. Heavy faecal odor when concentrated; at high dilution it turns warm, faintly floral and slightly camphoraceous.

Skatole là indole có thêm một nhóm methyl, hình thành khi vi khuẩn phân giải tryptophan trong ruột. Bác sĩ người Đức Ludwig Brieger mô tả chất này năm 1877. Tên gọi đến từ tiếng Hy Lạp skatos, nghĩa là phân. Chất này có mặt với lượng vết trong một số chất tiết động vật dùng trong hương liệu cổ điển.

Skatole is indole with an added methyl group, formed when gut bacteria break down tryptophan. The German physician Ludwig Brieger described it in 1877. The name comes from the Greek skatos, meaning dung. It occurs in trace amounts in some animal secretions used in classical perfumery.

Skatole dùng ở vết trong accord civet, da và hoa trắng để tạo độ sống động có sắc thú. Liều lượng phải rất thấp vì mùi nhanh chóng trở nên khó chịu.

Skatole is used in traces in civet, leather and white floral accords for an animal liveliness. Doses must be very low because the odor soon becomes unpleasant.
