Muscone là cấu tử mùi chính của xạ hương hươu xạ (Moschus spp.). Heinrich Walbaum tách được hợp chất này năm 1906. Năm 1926 Leopold Ružička xác định muscone là một ketone vòng 15 cạnh, một phát hiện làm thay đổi hiểu biết về vòng lớn trong hoá học hữu cơ; ông nhận giải Nobel Hoá học năm 1939 cho các công trình về polymethylene và terpene.
Muscone trong xạ tự nhiên là đồng phân (R), thường gọi là l-muscone. Muscone thương phẩm được tổng hợp, ở dạng racemic hoặc làm giàu một đồng phân.
Muscone is the key odorant of deer musk from Moschus species. Heinrich Walbaum isolated it in 1906. In 1926 Leopold Ružička showed that muscone is a 15-membered ring ketone, a result that changed how chemists viewed large rings; he received the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for work on polymethylenes and terpenes.
Natural muscone is the (R) enantiomer, often called l-muscone. Commercial muscone is synthetic, either racemic or enriched in one enantiomer.
Muscone được dùng ở nồng độ thấp để tạo độ ấm và độ tròn cho phần đáy, thường phối cùng các musk vòng lớn khác. Giá thành cao hơn phần lớn musk tổng hợp nên thường dùng trong nước hoa cao cấp hơn là trong sản phẩm tẩy rửa. Muscone thay thế cho xạ hươu thật, nguyên liệu nay bị kiểm soát theo CITES.
Muscone is used at low levels to add warmth and roundness to the base, often alongside other macrocyclic musks. It costs more than most synthetic musks and is therefore found mainly in fine fragrance rather than in household products. It stands in for natural deer musk, a material now controlled under CITES.
