Bourgeonal nổi tiếng ngoài ngành hương nhờ nghiên cứu của Spehr và cộng sự đăng trên Science năm 2003: chất này kích hoạt thụ thể khứu giác OR1D2 (hOR17-4) có trên tinh trùng người.

Bourgeonal became known outside perfumery through a 2003 Science study by Spehr and colleagues: it activates the olfactory receptor OR1D2 (hOR17-4) present on human sperm cells.
