Musk xylene là một trong các musk nitro sớm nhất và rẻ nhất, được dùng với khối lượng rất lớn trong xà phòng và chất tẩy rửa suốt thế kỷ 20.

Năm 2008, ECHA đưa musk xylene vào Danh sách Ứng viên các chất rất đáng lo ngại (SVHC) vì rất khó phân huỷ và rất dễ tích luỹ sinh học (vPvB). Chất này sau đó được đưa vào Phụ lục XIV của REACH, tức phải có giấy phép mới được dùng tại EU. IFRA ban hành tiêu chuẩn Cấm, công bố 2009.

Musk xylene was one of the earliest and cheapest nitro musks and was used in very large volumes in soap and detergent throughout the 20th century.

In 2008 ECHA placed musk xylene on the Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC) as very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB). It was later added to REACH Annex XIV, meaning use in the EU requires authorisation. IFRA issued a Prohibition Standard, published 2009.

Musk xylene is no longer used in fragrance under IFRA. It is a standard example of a molecule phased out for environmental reasons.
