Decanoic acid xuất hiện ở nồng độ rất thấp trong vài tinh dầu. Dữ liệu cho thấy hợp chất an toàn ở liều thông thường.
Trên da. Bôi nguyên chất trên da thỏ trong 24 giờ gây kích ứng từ trung bình đến nặng. Patch test ở 1 phần trăm trên 28 tình nguyện viên không gây kích ứng cũng không gây mẫn cảm.
Đường uống và da. LD50 cấp tính trên chuột là 3.73 g/kg. LD50 trên thỏ qua da vượt 5 g/kg, mức cao đặc trưng cho hợp chất ít độc.
Ung thư. Không có tác dụng ức chế khối u Ehrlich ở chuột. Tuy nhiên khi trộn cùng tế bào khối u trước khi tiêm thì cho thấy hoạt tính ức chế khối u.
Decanoic acid appears at very low concentrations in a few essential oils. Available data indicate it is safe at standard use levels.
Skin. Applied undiluted to rabbit skin for 24 hours, it was moderately to severely irritating. A 1 percent patch test on 28 volunteers produced neither irritation nor sensitization.
Oral and dermal. Acute oral LD50 in rats is 3.73 g/kg. Acute dermal LD50 in rabbits exceeds 5 g/kg, levels typical of low-toxicity compounds.
Cancer. No antitumor effect was seen against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma in mice. When mixed with tumor cells before injection, it showed tumor-inhibiting activity.

Decanoic acid is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid found abundantly in coconut and palm kernel oils as triglycerides. In essential oils it occurs only in trace amounts.
