Civetone là cấu tử mùi đặc trưng của civet, chất tiết từ tuyến của cầy hương châu Phi (Civettictis civetta). Cùng với muscone, civetone là đối tượng giúp Ružička chứng minh năm 1926 rằng vòng carbon rất lớn có thể bền vững; civetone có vòng 17 cạnh chứa một liên kết đôi cấu hình cis.

Civetone is the signature odorant of civet, the glandular secretion of the African civet (Civettictis civetta). Together with muscone it allowed Ružička to show in 1926 that very large carbon rings are stable; civetone has a 17-membered ring with one cis double bond.
Civetone is now made synthetically, which has greatly reduced the need for natural civet.

Civetone is used at trace to low levels to add an animal skin effect to white florals, chypres and leather accords. In small doses it makes floral notes such as jasmine and orange blossom fuller and more lifelike.
