Citronellic acid is a natural metabolite of citronellol. The compound appears primarily in emerald cypress.

Skin. Undiluted application to rabbit skin was moderately irritating. A 2 percent patch test on 25 volunteers caused no irritation or sensitization.

Oral and dermal. Acute oral LD50 in rats is 2.61 g/kg; rabbit dermal LD50 is 450 mg/kg, a moderate level.

Limited data suggest the compound has slight toxicity and minimal skin reactivity risk.
