Acid butyric có trong bơ (dưới dạng ester glyceride), phô mai và mồ hôi. Tên gọi lấy từ tiếng Latin butyrum, nghĩa là bơ.

Butyric acid occurs in butter (as glyceride esters), cheese and sweat. The name comes from the Latin butyrum, meaning butter.

Trong nước hoa, acid butyric hầu như chỉ dùng ở vết cực nhỏ cho hiệu ứng thú hoặc sữa; các ester của nó được dùng nhiều hơn cho mùi trái cây.

In fragrance, butyric acid is used only in minute traces for animal or milky effects; its esters are far more common for fruity notes.
