Spicy Leather Woody

Gỗ cay da thuộc: gỗ và gia vị thêm bạch dương, castoreum

Spicy Leather Woody is subfamily E6 of the Woody family in the SFP table. The SFP describes it as a spicy woody accord thickened with leather and animalic notes, citing birch and castoreum. The structure therefore has three parts: wood, spice, and a smoky leather layer.

The branch sits between E3 Spicy Woody and the Leather family (Cuir, family G). In the Leather family leather is the theme; in E6 wood remains the theme, with leather and smoke as reinforcement. Common spices are black pepper, nutmeg, clove and cinnamon.

01Structure and materials

The classic leather note comes from birch tar, made by dry distillation of birch bark and wood, which smells of smoke, tar and phenol. Cade, a tar from juniper wood, gives a similar smoke. Castoreum, extracted from the gland sacs of the beaver, gives leather, smoke and phenol, with a dried fruit note on dilution; today it is mostly replaced by reconstitutions. Isobutyl quinoline is the classic molecule of twentieth century leather accords; it is very strong and usually used diluted.

IFRA does not allow crude birch tar as a fragrance ingredient; only the rectified grade is used, with total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) not above 1 ppb in the finished product. Rectified cade follows the same PAH threshold. Quinoline has been prohibited by IFRA since 2010, but that standard does not apply directly to isobutyl quinoline. In castoreum reconstitutions, p-cresol has an IFRA restriction standard (2023). The spice part brings eugenol and cinnamal, both covered by IFRA standards and labelled in the EU.

Dior's Fahrenheit (1988) is often cited as a modern example of wood with leather, with violet leaf, nutmeg and woods over leather. Credits vary between sources: Jean-Louis Sieuzac is named in most, together with Michel Almairac or Maurice Roger. Many databases class it as an Aromatic Fougère; the SFP has not published its placement online.

The SFP website publishes only subfamily names; perfume lists per subfamily are in the printed Classification officielle des parfums. Perfumes named here are commonly cited examples, not official SFP placements.

03A natural approach

A natural leather woody accord can use rectified birch tar and cade at very low dose for smoke, labdanum for warm leather, denicotinised tobacco absolute for dry leaf, and cedar, vetiver and guaiacwood for the wood. Black pepper, nutmeg and clove give the spice.

Natural castoreum is of animal origin; many producers use synthetic reconstitutions. The soft leather of isobutyl quinoline has no plant equivalent. Use only rectified birch tar and cade with PAH documentation. This page gives no formula percentages.
