Bulnesia sarmientoi is a large tree of the Chaco region of South America, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia. The wood is extremely hard and heavy, sinking in water.

The oil is steam-distilled from the wood. Produced in Paraguay and Argentina.

Family Zygophyllaceae. Distinct from guaiac (Guaiacum officinale) in the same family but different genus, both yield wood called 'lignum vitae'.

Bulnesia sarmientoi is on CITES Appendix II (controlled trade). Sourcing requires permits.
