Safety

Skin sensitization if oxidized

Oxidation products of α-pinene may sensitize skin.

Store in dark, sealed, refrigerated container. Add an antioxidant to formulations.

Cistus oil contains small amounts of isopinocamphone and α-thujone (both GABAA inhibitors), but also high α-pinene which potentiates GABAA. No restrictions are therefore needed regarding neurotoxicity.

Botanical source

Cistus ladanifer is a Mediterranean shrub, particularly common in Spain and Portugal. The leaves exude a natural aromatic resin when heated.

Cistus oil is steam-distilled directly from the flowering plant. Distinct from labdanum oil, also from Cistus ladanifer, labdanum is produced from the gum, with different chemistry and aroma.
