Musky Citrus is subfamily A7 of the Hesperidic family in the SFP table. The formula keeps the top of an Eau de Cologne but replaces the thin base with a clear musk layer, usually synthetic musks with a clean laundry smell.
Citrus evaporates quickly. Musks barely evaporate, so they hold a clean, bright feel on skin long after the limonene has gone. This branch reflects the role of synthetic musks in modern perfumery.
Mugler Cologne (2001), composed by Alberto Morillas, is often cited for this style: bergamot, neroli and petitgrain on a white musk base suggesting clean soap.
The musks used here belong to several groups: polycyclic musks such as Galaxolide (IFF, 1965); macrocyclic musks such as Habanolide and ethylene brassylate; linear musks such as Helvetolide (Firmenich, 1990). They differ in cleanness, warmth and fruitiness. Older nitro musks such as musk ambrette are now prohibited in EU cosmetics.
Rules to note: cold-pressed citrus oils such as bergamot, expressed lemon and grapefruit are under IFRA phototoxicity limits in leave-on products; FCF bergamot and distilled lime contain far less furocoumarin. Hexamethylindanopyran (Galaxolide) and hexadecanolactone are named on the expanded allergen list of Regulation (EU) 2023/1545.
The SFP website publishes only subfamily names; perfume lists per subfamily are in the printed Classification officielle des parfums. Perfumes named here are commonly cited examples, not official SFP placements.
A7 is close to A1 Eau de Cologne in its top structure, and close to B2 Floral Musky when the floral layer grows.

Natural plant musks are few: ambrette seed contains ambrettolide, and angelica root has small amounts of macrocyclic musk lactones. They give a warm, slightly green musk base, not as clean as synthetic musks.
