History

Hexadecanolide is the 17-membered lactone of 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (juniperic acid). The name dihydroambrettolide shows that it is the saturated form of ambrettolide, the main lactone of ambrette seed.

In perfumery

Hexadecanolide gives a warm, ambrette-like musk and is used in perfume and cosmetics to round out the base.
