(Z)-Ambrettolide is the principal musk-aroma constituent of ambrette seed oil, used as a natural alternative to synthetic muscones in fine perfumery.

Skin. Tested full strength on rabbit skin, it was non-irritating. A 1 percent patch test on human subjects showed neither irritation nor sensitization.

Oral and dermal. Acute oral LD50 in rats and acute dermal LD50 in rabbits both exceeded 5 g/kg, levels typical of low-toxicity compounds.

The molecular structure does not raise specific safety concerns.
