Fruity Chypre

The fruit note in a classic Chypre is usually a lactone: undecalactone gives a smooth peach, other gamma lactones give apricot and coconut. In 1944 Edmond Roudnitska composed Femme for Rochas, adding plum and spice to the Chypre frame.

The fruit does not replace the base. Oakmoss and labdanum still give bitterness and warmth; the lactone softens the sharp edge of the moss and adds a skin-like feel. After 2000, as oakmoss was tightly restricted, many perfumes of this kind relied more on patchouli, and the fruit moved to berries, pear or lychee.

Oakmoss used today must be a low-atranol grade under Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 and the IFRA Standard; cold-pressed bergamot is subject to phototoxicity limits in leave-on products.

D2 sits next to D7 Floral Chypre: many Chypres carry both flowers and fruit, and the subfamily depends on which is more prominent. The branch also approaches the Amber family when the base adds much vanilla and sweet resin.

Without synthetic lactones, the fruit note can come from osmanthus, which smells naturally of apricot through its lactones and ionones, and from davana with its dried fruit facet. Blackcurrant bud adds a green berry note.

The base stays as in a natural Chypre: low-atranol oakmoss, labdanum, patchouli. Check IFRA limits and the EU allergen list for each material. This page gives no formula percentages.
