Perilla has multiple chemotypes: perillaldehyde CT (safe), citral CT, pulegone CT (neurotoxic), perilla ketone CT (lung toxin in livestock).

Pulegone CT contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding, similar to pennyroyal.

Perillaldehyde CT (common East Asian chemotype) is safe at low dermal concentrations.

Botanical source

Perilla frutescens is an East Asian herb, Japan (shiso シソ), Korea (kkaennip 깻잎), Vietnam (tia to), China.

In Vietnam, tia to is a familiar culinary herb, used with pho, fish, and bun. Red tia to and green tia to are two cultivars.

The essential oil is distilled from leaves. Main production: Japan, Korea, China.

Notes

Perillaldehyde is about 2,000 times sweeter than sugar, used as an artificial sweetener in Japan.

In East Asian cosmetics, perilla extract is common for anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing applications.
