Bursera graveolens is a tree from the dry Pacific coastal regions of South America, particularly Peru and Ecuador.

Indigenous traditions use it as incense for cleansing rituals (smudging) and spiritual ceremonies. 'Palo santo' means 'holy wood' in Spanish.

The essential oil is distilled from naturally fallen wood, the wood must die and weather naturally for 4-10 years to develop aromatic compounds.

Family Burseraceae, same family as frankincense, myrrh, and opopanax.
