Orris

Very low skin sensitization risk. Iris oil and absolute are both considered safe, α-irone is non-toxic in rodent studies.

Rodent study: α-irone given ip at total dose of 1.95 or 9.6 g/kg over 24 weeks did not increase lung tumor incidence over control.

Low drug interaction risk.

No data indicates hazard in pregnancy.

Iris pallida (orris dalmatica) and Iris germanica are the two main commercial sources of orris. Iris pallida yields sweeter, more crystalline irones; Iris germanica has a different irone profile.

Rhizomes are harvested, cleaned, then AGED 3-5 years. During aging, iridal precursors in the root convert to irones, the compounds giving orris its characteristic aroma. Distilling fresh roots does not yield aromatic orris.

Main production: Italy (Tuscany), Morocco. The Florence (Firenze) region is regarded as the gold standard for orris, Iris pallida 'Florentina' is the benchmark cultivar.

The name 'Florentina' is sometimes used for Iris florentina (a different species), a taxonomic confusion.

Family Iridaceae.

Orris is among the most expensive perfumery raw materials in the world. The 3-5 year aging requirement plus very low oil yield can drive prices to 75,000-120,000 USD/kg for premium orris absolute.

Orris aroma: floral, woody, lightly sweet, powdery, with a slight warm woodiness. Characteristic of 'powdery' and 'iris-based' perfumery, not replicable by synthesis.

In classical perfumery, orris is a primary base note in many great fragrance houses, particularly Chanel, Dior, and Guerlain.

Orris butter (orris essential oil) differs from orris concrete (solvent extraction). The concrete has a richer aroma but is less crystalline.

In mainstream cosmetics, orris is essentially absent due to its cost, found only in niche perfume and fine fragrance.
