Peru balsam is among the top 5 most common skin sensitizers in cosmetics. EU requires label declaration above 0.001 percent in leave-on products.

Benzyl benzoate, benzyl cinnamate, and cinnamic acid are the main allergens.

Very low dermal concentration recommended.

Not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Myroxylon balsamum is a tree from El Salvador, despite the name 'Peru balsam' (historically routed through Peruvian ports).

Produced by tapping the trunk bark, yellowish-brown balsam flows out. A manual and traditional process.

Family Fabaceae (Leguminosae).

Distinctive balsamic-vanilla-cinnamon aroma. In perfumery, Peru balsam is a traditional base note for oriental fragrance.

Significantly restricted in modern cosmetics due to high sensitization rate.
