Camphor (brown)

Potentially carcinogenic due to high safrole content (50 – 60 percent).

Broad contraindication: should not be used, either internally or externally.

Minimum lethal oral dose of safrole in the rabbit is 1.0 g per kg.

IFRA and the EU recommend a maximum exposure level of 0.01 percent of safrole from safrole-containing essential oils in cosmetics.

Brown camphor (sometimes called 'red camphor') is the medium fraction of fractional distillation of crude camphor oil from Cinnamomum camphora.

Not commercially available for therapeutic application. Typically used industrially to isolate safrole or 1,8-cineole.

Sometimes sold as 'Chinese sassafras oil'.
