Contains thujone up to 60 percent. Neurotoxic at high doses.

Strictly contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, and for children under 6 years.

Avoid in individuals with a history of seizures.

Oral doses must be very low if used at all. Dermal levels should be limited.

Artemisia afra is a Southern African wormwood. Grows wild in highland Lesotho, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Used in Xhosa and Zulu traditional medicine for colds, fevers, and respiratory infections.

Family Asteraceae, genus Artemisia.

Chemotype varies widely. Some samples are high in β-thujone, others high in 1,8-cineole.

Oil production is limited, primarily from South Africa.
