heading home for the new year

3 oils · Herbal · Woody · Warm spice · code BL-2702

Star anise and cedarwood in equal parts, sweet spice meeting warm dry wood; clary sage closes with rounded herbs. It evokes the year-end train ride back to your hometown and a kitchen smelling of simmering broth. Good for the living room or bedroom in the days before Tet, the Lunar New Year. Star anise is strong, so diffuse in intervals; if it feels too intense, cut it to 2 drops.

How it unfolds

As it settles. Star anise (sweet and warm, reminiscent of pho broth and Tet sweets); clary sage (sweet, herbal, slightly musky and unhurried) form the body of the scent and stay longest in the room.

What remains. Cedarwood (dry and warm, like a wooden chest and pencil shavings) sinks in and lingers after the diffuser is off.

Method

Diffuser
Star Anise 3 · Cedarwood 3 · Clary Sage 2 drops in 200–300 ml of water. Run for 30–60 minutes, then take a break.
10 ml roller
Star Anise 2 · Cedarwood 2 · Clary Sage 1 drops, then top up with a carrier oil (jojoba or sweet almond). Dab on wrists and the back of the neck.
50 ml room spray
Star Anise 11 · Cedarwood 11 · Clary Sage 8 drops + 1 teaspoon of food-grade alcohol, then top up with distilled water. Shake before spraying.

FAQ

How do I use heading home for the new year in a diffuser?
Add Star Anise 3 · Cedarwood 3 · Clary Sage 2 drops to 200–300 ml of water. In a room under 15 m², use 1–2 drops less; in a room over 25 m², add 1 more drop of the main oil.
What can I use instead of star anise?
Swap star anise for cinnamon or coriander — same warm spice family. The blend will shift a little: cinnamon is spicy-sweet, hot and warm.
When is the best time to use heading home for the new year?
Made for chilly days, cold rain, Tet (the Lunar New Year) and Christmas; use it in the living room or bedroom.
