Methyl heptenone is an aliphatic ketone present at low levels in many Citrus and lemongrass oils.

Skin. Undiluted methyl heptenone was irritating to rabbit skin. A 3 percent test on 25 volunteers caused no irritation and no sensitization. In a modified Draize procedure on guinea pigs, the compound was non-sensitizing at 20 percent.

Acute toxicity. Acute oral LD50 in rats 3.5 to 4.1 g/kg. Acute dermal LD50 exceeded 5 g/kg.

Methyl heptenone (also called sulcatone) is one of the chemicals emitted by humans through sweat and breath. It also occurs in many plants and is a synthetic precursor to linalool, geraniol and citronellol.
