2-Undecanone

2-Undecanone is the principal constituent of rue oil at 47 to 49 percent. Available data indicates it is safe at standard concentrations.

Skin. In a modified Draize procedure on guinea pigs, 2-undecanone at 10 percent in the challenge phase was non-sensitizing. Undiluted material was not irritating to rabbits, hairless mice or swine when applied for 24 hours under occlusion. At 5 percent on 25 volunteers it was neither irritating nor sensitizing. Non-phototoxic.

Oral. Acute oral LD50 exceeded 5 g/kg in rats and was 3.88 g/kg in mice. Acute dermal LD50 in rabbits exceeded 5 g/kg.

2-Undecanone is a natural ketone used as an insect repellent in commercial products. In rue oil, this constituent is not the principal risk factor; rue's risk profile is mainly driven by phototoxic furanocoumarins.
