Poplar bud absolute

Chồi dương absolute

Populus balsamifera, Populus nigra

Balsam poplar bud absolute, Bourgeons de peuplier absolue

Salicaceae · Chồi lá mùa đông, phủ nhựa · Resin-coated winter leaf buds · Solvent-extracted from buds

Aroma

Sweet resin, honey, light cinnamon, hay, faintly medicinal. Warm and balsamic, reminiscent of propolis and spring sap.

Safety

Poplar bud absolute has no dedicated standard in the IFRA 51 index. α-Bisabolol, present in Populus balsamifera buds, is IFRA-restricted (2020).

Poplar bud resin is the main source of propolis in temperate regions. Caffeate esters in the resin, such as 3-methyl-2-butenyl caffeate, are recorded as the main propolis allergens. People already allergic to propolis should take note. Store dark, sealed and cool.

Notes

Poplar leaf buds are coated in sticky orange-yellow resin by late winter. The resin protects the bud from cold, water and microbes. When buds open in spring, the resin scent spreads through poplar woods.

Buds are gathered in late winter, before opening, when resin is most abundant. Populus balsamifera in North America and Populus nigra in Europe are the main sources.

The absolute is solvent-extracted from the buds. Since the material is mostly resin, the product is thick, dark and slow to evaporate. Oil distilled from balsam poplar buds (in the library) is lighter and lacks the resin fraction.

Honeybees collect poplar bud resin to make propolis. Temperate propolis and poplar buds therefore share composition: flavonoids, cinnamic acid, caffeic acid and their esters. This is also why they share allergens.

In perfumery poplar bud absolute gives a resinous honey note in amber, tobacco, leather and light gourmand accords. It pairs with beeswax, labdanum, tonka and hay.

Poplar bud absolute is very thick and usually needs dilution before weighing. On a blotter the resin and honey notes show best after a few hours. Since it shares allergens with propolis, dosage in leave-on products should be low, and producers should hold safety data for the lot.
