Safety

Low concern · Safe at standard use

Menthyl acetate is the acetate ester of menthol, present at low levels in peppermint and cornmint oils. Available data does not indicate significant risk.

Skin. Undiluted menthyl acetate was mildly irritating to rabbit skin. An 8 percent patch test on 25 volunteers caused no irritation and no sensitization.

Acute toxicity. Acute oral LD50 in rats exceeded 5 g/kg. Acute dermal LD50 in rabbits exceeded 5 g/kg.

Antioxidant. (-)-Menthyl acetate showed antioxidant activity in human liver microsomes, reversibly inhibiting nifedipine oxidation and acting as a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor.

Notes

Menthyl acetate contributes softness and floral character to the peppermint aroma signature. The ratio of menthol to menthone to menthyl acetate is a key quality marker for peppermint oil.
