Cyperus scariosus is a grass-like perennial growing wild in India. The rhizomes have a woody, earthy, lightly sweet aroma, distinctive for oriental perfumery.

The essential oil is distilled from dried rhizomes. Production is mainly in India.

Family Cyperaceae, same family as Cyperus rotundus (nut grass).

Also called 'cypriol' in perfumery. A unique woody-earthy-sweet aroma not replicated by any other oil.

In Ayurvedic medicine, nagarmotha root (called 'musta' or 'mustaka') is used for digestion and fever. The essential oil is a secondary product.
