Botanical source

Eremophila mitchellii is a tree of Australia's arid zones, with very hard, aromatic heartwood. The essential oil is extracted from chippings and sawdust.

Family Myoporaceae. The folk names 'desert rosewood' and 'Buddha wood' both reflect the deep resinous note of the heartwood.

The constituent table above gives averages. Many sesquiterpenoids in the oil remain not fully characterized.

Quality

The oil tends to polymerize over time. Sealed storage required.

Notes

Research by Beattie et al (2011) recorded activity against mouse lymphoblast P388D1 cells in vitro, with eremophilone identified as the principal active constituent.
