2-Phenylethyl acetate

2-Phenylethyl acetate is a light ester contributing floral and honey notes in floral absolutes. Available data indicates it is safe at standard concentrations.

Skin. Undiluted material was slightly irritating to rabbit skin under 24-hour occlusion, but not to 20 human volunteers. At 10 percent it was not sensitizing on 25 volunteers.

Oral. Acute oral LD50 in rats was 3.2 to over 5.0 g/kg. Acute dermal LD50 in rabbits was 6.21 g/kg.

Cancer. In intraperitoneal mouse studies with total doses of 1.2 or 6.0 g/kg over 20 weeks, primary lung tumor incidence was no higher than in the control group.

The acetate ester of 2-phenylethanol carries traces of both rose and honey, used in fine perfumery as a light floral note.
