History

Patchoulol is the main sesquiterpene alcohol of patchouli oil (Pogostemon cablin); its share of the oil varies with origin. It can crystallise and was once called patchouli camphor.

Patchoulol produced by microbial fermentation is now available, sold under its own trade names as a clean, colorless patchouli.

In perfumery

Patchoulol is used where the woody, earthy side of patchouli is wanted without the brown color and musty facets of the oil. It is also a marker in patchouli oil quality testing.
