History

Nopyl acetate is made from β-pinene in turpentine via a Prins reaction with formaldehyde (giving nopol), then acetylation. It is an example of fragrance material derived from turpentine chemistry.

In perfumery

Nopyl acetate is used in soap, detergent and fragrance as an inexpensive fruity woody note.
