Myrtenyl acetate is a bicyclic monoterpenoid ester occurring primarily in myrtle and valerian oils.

Skin. A 10 percent patch test on 26 volunteers caused no irritation and no sensitization.

Acute toxicity. Acute oral LD50 in rats ranges from 1.0 to 2.6 g/kg. Acute dermal LD50 in rabbits exceeded 5 g/kg.

Myrtenyl acetate is a chemical marker for myrtle oil. The ratio of myrtenyl acetate to 1,8-cineole distinguishes Tunisian myrtle (high myrtenyl acetate) from Moroccan myrtle (high 1,8-cineole).
