Guaiazulene is a distinctive blue-purple sesquiterpene occurring in boldo and blue cypress oils.

Mucous membranes. Five patients with inflamed lips after using the same toothpaste showed weak reactions to guaiazulene on patch testing.

Antioxidant. It inhibits lipid peroxidation in rat liver and effectively scavenges hydroxyl radicals and DPPH.

Mutagenicity. Not mutagenic in Salmonella strains TA98 and TA100, with or without S9.

No dermal or acute toxicity data were found.

Pharmacokinetics

Guaiazulene inhibits the activity of several CYP isoforms in rats and shows a protective effect in paracetamol toxicity.

Notes

Guaiazulene together with chamazulene are two azulenes responsible for the distinctive blue-purple color of blue chamomile, yarrow and blue cypress oils.
