Dehydrocostus lactone belongs to the sesquiterpene lactones from the Compositae family, a chemical group notorious for skin sensitization.
Skin. A confirmed dermal sensitizer. Patch testing at 0.033 percent produced positive reactions in 4 of 10 patients. In 250 gardeners surveyed, 25 showed Compositae allergy, with 24 cases likely occupationally sensitized.
Vascular and reproductive. The compound dose-dependently inhibited angiogenesis in vitro and in mice. This antiangiogenic action suggests caution in pregnancy.
Cancer. Dehydrocostus lactone was dose- and time-dependently cytotoxic against several human cancer cell lines.
