History

Ambrein is the triterpene alcohol that makes up most of ambergris, a material formed in the gut of the sperm whale. As ambergris floats at sea for years, light and oxygen break ambrein down into odorants such as ambroxide and ambrinol.

Understanding this degradation pathway underpinned the development of ambroxide and other synthetic ambers.

In perfumery

Ambrein is not used directly as an odor note. It serves as a marker for authenticating genuine ambergris in analysis.
