γ-Terpinyl acetate

γ-Terpinyl acetate is a minor isomer of terpinyl acetate. Data are limited but the mixed isomer toxicity profile indicates safety at standard concentrations.

Skin. At 5 percent on 25 volunteers it was neither irritating nor sensitizing. Testing on 179 dermatitis patients suspected of cosmetic allergy and 100 other patients showed no reactions at the respective test conditions.

Oral. Acute oral LD50 in rats was 5.1 g/kg for the mixed isomer.

Subchronic. Rats fed 1,000, 2,500 or 10,000 ppm for 20 weeks showed no adverse effects.

Inhalation. Chronic terpinyl acetate vapor inhalation in animals causes changes in the central nervous system, blood and liver. The minimum active concentration is 10 mg/m3.

The γ isomer rarely appears in isolation. It typically co-occurs with α and β terpinyl acetate in plant essential oils.
