Safety

Phototoxic · IFRA restricted

Dimethyl anthranilate is the principal constituent of mandarin leaf oil. The compound is phototoxic and is specifically restricted by IFRA.

Skin. Applied undiluted to rabbit skin, it was non-irritating. A 10 percent patch test on humans showed no irritation or sensitization. However, it was phototoxic in 8 of 10 volunteers at 5.0 percent. The NOAEL for phototoxicity is 0.5 percent. It did not cause photoallergy at 5.0 percent.

Oral and dermal. Acute oral LD50 in rats is 2.25 to 3.38 g/kg. Acute dermal LD50 in rabbits exceeds 5 g/kg.

Subchronic. A 12-week rat study established a NOAEL of 20.3 mg/kg.
